La Tortilleria, Kensington

La Tortilleria is a little business with great dreams: to manufacture the best tortillas in town. La Tortilleria, tucked away between the warehouses of Kensington's Stubbs Street, is one of Melbourne's few tortilla-making establishments.

It stands out as a modest beacon of real Mexican food, with Mexican-born Gerardo Lopez and his Australian companion Diana Hull at the helm.

When the tortilla machine is turned on, spectators can watch the lime-soaked grains transform into dough, which is then crushed on a stone grinder and pressed into a flawless tortilla.

Lopez characterizes the restaurant as a genuine, Mexican concept with no frills. Back in the restaurant, there are colorful and cozy areas where diners can sit and eat tacos that don't fall apart in their hands. Quesadillas and sopes are also available, as well as some of the greatest guacamole this side of the Pacific.

But, at the end of the day, La Tortilleria is all about the tortilla, which comes in stacks (fresh or vacuum-packed) and in half-kilo or kilo sizes.
