Butchers Diner, Melbourne CBD

Butchers Diner is a late-night meat market, cafe, and takeout spot.

Keep moving if you find yourself in the CBD after a night out, craving saturated fat and regretting your decision at 3 a.m. If you're looking for a blood sausage and devilled egg hamburger, go no further.

A take on the American diner with red and grey tile floors and a long, curved orange bench. In a massive meat cabinet further in, you'll find racks of excellent beef.

Con Christopoulos bought the facility to serve as a boning room for his in-house butcher, Simon Poole, who is in charge of meat at Christopoulos' other restaurants, including French Saloon, Neapoli, and The European, which are all just around the corner. From then, the concept grew.

Milk-bun burgers, Coney Island chilli dogs, charcoal-grilled creole fish cutlets, Greek pork skewers on crusty bread rolls, and yakitori-style ox tongue, gizzards, livers, and duck hearts are among the items on the menu.

A rustic, slightly regal second-level dining room and function space may be found upstairs. It boasts an old flowery stained-glass doorway that leads out into a little roof-top patio, as well as a high, assorted-timber ceiling overhead.

An egg burger with bacon is available for breakfast, or you may imagine you're in New York with a filter coffee and a cinnamon and caramel scroll.
