Let's face it, even the best holiday season isn't always relaxing. Laughter, family and friends are occasions which inevitably come with cooking, cleaning, caring and catering.

Before the summer turns to autumn, you deserve a different kind of break - a few days of luxury just for you. Stuff and Tairawhiti Gisborne have partnered to offer the ultimate pamper package.

The perfect mini-escape

Tairawhiti Gisborne is one of the most stunning corners of New Zealand. The first place in the world to see the sunrise each day, the region is known for its history and its natural wonders.

The beautiful Matawhero Winery is a perfect combination of both; a luxury escape which sets you up with everything you need for three days of sunshine, wine and adventure.

Enjoy a wine tasting and a gourmet platter amongst the vines and olive trees.

A luxury stay

The vineyard accommodation at Matawhero is distinctively Gisborne. One of New Zealand's oldest wineries, Matawhero's first vintage was 1975. The vineyards are 100 per cent naturally dry farmed using natural rainfall and the region's rich fertile soils. The silken clay and fine silt loams hold moisture and promote microbial activity for a wide variety of grapes, rich with the flavours of the local terroir.

Matawhero's two luxury cabins are nestled amongst the vines. The Noir cabin - named after the recently planted Pinot Noir variety - is modern luxury, finished in dark velvety tones. The cabin has an ensuite and kitchenette as well as a private outdoor area overlooking the vines.

The Blush cabin is named and designed for Matawhero's signature Pinot Rose and it's beautiful blush tones.

Sample local delicacies

Great local food and wine is just a short stroll from your accommodation at the rustic Matawhero Cellar Door. Enjoy a wine tasting and a gourmet platter amongst the vines and olive trees. Wander the gardens, play a game of petanque or explore the underground cellar and its collection of iconic New Zealand wines.

Your luxury escape package includes wine tasting and a cheese board on arrival, as well as a lunch platter and a bottle of wine to enjoy during your stay.

SUPPLIED: The Great Gisborne Railbike Adventure.

Memorable experiences

You won't be in any hurry to rush away from the tranquil Matawhero accommodation, but unique local activities do await, such as The Great Gisborne Railbike Adventure.

The Gisborne to Napier rail line opened in 1942 and was decommissioned in 2012. For Railbike engineer and founder Geoff Main, the design literally came to him in a middle-of-the-night light bulb moment.

Geoff's world-first tandem cycles are designed to slide onto the disused railway lines - a classic triumph of Kiwi ingenuity.

His solution is a steel chassis which connects two bikes. The steel frame keeps the bikes on the rail line - all you have to do is pedal and enjoy the view.

Head to Wainui beach to watch the sunrise before breakfast.

Choose from three spectacular rides - the half-day Mahia coastal tour, the half-day beach loop or the one-hour trip across the Waipoa bridge. All tours are led by knowledgeable local guides and include railbike hire. E-bikes are also available.

You'll travel through bush-clad valleys and historic tunnels, past spectacular ocean views, vineyards, orange groves and farmland to epic, off-the-beaten path picnic spots.

If footpower is your preferred option, another day's adventure could involve a dramatic and memorable stroll. Head to Wainui beach to watch the sunrise before breakfast. A gold-sand beach, Wainui has a world-famous surf break.
