The bucket list adventure of a lifetime in style and luxury
It's certainly the year for discovering new joy in our own backyard. Despite the stresses of the world, many New Zealanders have been fortunate enough to have a great time visiting new regions as well as trying out new activities in places they've been to before. But every so often something new comes along that's not quite like any tourist experience the country has ever seen; the kind of thing you do once in a lifetime and remember forever. If you feel like you've 'been there, done that' with many of the big attractions Aotearoa has to offer, how about a flight in a private jet to see the Southern Lights? Now that's one you might not have ticked off yet.
If seeing Aurora Australis from the sky sounds amazing enough, you won't believe what else is included in this trip - pro-photography tips, pre-flight education from a former NASA employee, champagne and canapes on the flight deck - this is really a bucket list adventure.
Your adventure will begin at the George Hotel - a five star boutique property in the heart of ?tautahi.
It's almost beyond comprehension - the thought of soaring over the Southern Ocean at up to 40,000 feet in near-complete darkness for a stellar spotting expedition. This is an experience very few people will ever have. The two-day adventure starts in Christchurch (there's a maximum of nine places) and if you arrive in the morning you'll have time to explore beautiful Christchurch - maybe lunch at the wonderful new Riverside complex or a stroll by the river? You could get your arts and culture fix, check out the new shopping areas or even take a city tour. Later on, check in to your accommodation at the George Hotel - a five star boutique property in the heart of ?tautahi - where your adventure will begin.
Fly on a private jet in total darkness to view the spectacular Southern Lights.
You'll be picked up from The George around 2pm and taken to the International Antarctic Centre where you'll be met by your expert ex-NASA guide who will share their immense knowledge and passion about Antarctica. In this behind-the-scenes, private tour, you'll learn about the continent's history, flora and fauna and - of course - all about the southern skies you're about to see.
Be treated to a private tour of the International Antarctic Centre, guided by an expert ex-NASA guide.
You'll also have a private Hagglund experience (all-terrain amphibious Antarctic vehicle) and a StormRoom experience complete with Shackleton Whiskey and huskies. You'll also experience a 4D big screen ice tour and meet the gorgeous penguins the centre is so well-known for. As if it couldn't get any better, your guide is also an accomplished photographer and will give you some great tips on how to capture what you're about to witness in the sky. You want to be able to show all your friends and family this incredible natural wonder so you'll need to know how to shoot it - rather than ending up with a blurry mess that no one can decipher when you get back home.
Fully prepped and educated, it will be time for bubbles, local wines, beers and canapes at a private bar - talk about doing things in style! And after that it's back to the George, for a delicious dinner with your travelling companions before being picked up for the main event.
With no light pollution, the stars will appear extraordinarily bright and your views of the Aurora Australis will be something you will never forget.
Obviously the flight will be incredible. Unlike a commercial plane, this jet is able to fly in near total darkness. It emits no light pollution which ensures that the stars will appear extraordinarily bright and your views of the Aurora Australis will be something you will never forget. You will have the opportunity to sit in the flight deck behind the captain and view the incredible luminous night sky from the cockpit as you sip more champagne and enjoy yet more canapes. You'll arrive back at the Jet Centre in the early morning and be delivered back to The George Hotel where you can settle in for a well deserved, luxurious sleep and a sumptuous breakfast when you wake.
