      Stop At: Fort Frederick, Trincomalee Town, Trincomalee 31000 Sri Lanka
      Occupying the neck of a narrow peninsula, Fort Frederick has been a defensively important site for centuries. It was initially built by Portuguese in 1623 and then rebuilt by Dutch. The fort was built on top of the highest point in the city – at the summit Swarmi Rock which has a rich history. Ruins of the ancient Gokanna monastery also had been found in the fort premises.The fortress is today used by the Sri Lankan army dotted with assorted cannons and artillery around the enclave with an occasional spotted deer gazing under the huge banyan trees. . The views from the rock are impressive, you can see far up and down the coast, and over the town and harbour.

      The Holy Koneswaram Temple, is a Hindu temple which lies on a high rocky promontory surrounded on three sides by the sea. It bears a history of over three millennia with its records indicating its roots in 1580 BC. The temple has gained its name from its deity, Lord Shiva. his, still beautiful, historical monument is what remains of what once was a sprawling temple city equal to the ancient city of Madurai, India. This site is a religious pilgrimage center and is one of the 5 “Pancha Ishwarams” that were built in the coastal region to honor lord Shiva. Surrounded by jaw-dropping scenery on all sides, the colorful Koneswaram temple sits high above the bay, a classical-medieval complex in the Eastern Province city of Trincomalee.

      The museum was declared open on 3 February 2013 by then Sri Lanka president Mahinda Rajapaksa coincide with the country's 65th Independence Day celebrations. A grand 18th-century Dutch colonial building has been renovated and turned into a museum. The museum is used to display country's maritime history, marine biodiversity and information of the history of the local Naval affairs.Upstairs there's a lot of useful info on the flora and fauna of the east coast, especially that of Pigeon Island. Wide porches are fine places to pause and take in the views. Make sure you explore both storeys, as it is arranged in a manner that will take you through maritime history in chronological order, along with the marine life that thrives under the azure waters.

Sri Lanka is popular for its two marine national parks, out of which the Pigeon Island national park has always been the crowd puller. The Pigeon Island National park is spread around an area of 470 plus hectares and was classified as a sanctuary in the early 1960s but changed to a national park in 2003 – making Pigeon Island National park 17th national park in Sri Lanka. This sceneric island was once used as a shooting range during the colonial era.

      The ruins of the little-known ancient monastery – Velgam Vihara – lay hidden in the dense jungle near the quaint Periyakulam Tank.
