Stop At: Hoa Lo Prison, 1 Hoa Lo St Hoan Kiem, Hanoi 10000 Vietnam

Hoa Lo Prison, also known as the Maison Centrale, played an important role in the expansion of French colonial exploitation in Vietnam. Many Vietnamese political prisoners have been tortured and killed here. Later, during the American War, the people of North Vietnam used this place to detain American soldiers.
Founded by the French colonial government in the late 19th century, the yellow façade faded with the years and the building's blue shutters enveloped the prison nightmares that took place behind the walls. Many revolutionary leaders of Vietnam were imprisoned here, including five comrades later, General Secretary of the Communist Party: Do Muoi, Nguyen Van Cu, Truong Chinh, Le Duan and Nguyen Van Linh. US Senator John McCain was a pilot captured during the Vietnam War and imprisoned for 5 years here. Douglas Peterson, who spent 6 years in prison, became the first ambassador to Vietnam after the war in 1997.
