Goryokaku Fort occupies the center of Hakodate's Goryokaku Park. Given its five-sided design, it's clear why this particular military fortification is called a "star fort." Designed by Takeda Ayasaburo and influenced by French military engineer Vauban, the fort was the first Western-style fortification in Japan. It was completed in 1855 to protect Hokkaido and the Tsugaru Strait.

Stop At: Hakodate Orthodox Church, 3-13 Motomachi, Hakodate 040-0054 Hokkaido
Hakodate Orthodox Church
The first Russian consul Goshkevitch built Hakodate Orthodox church, it is called "Church of the Resurrection". It once burned down in a fire in 1907, but was rebuilt in 1916. In 1983, it was designated an Important cultural property of Japan, as the second Orthodox church in Japan in the beginning of the 20th century. After that, it took three years from 1988 to reconstruct the whole church in order to make it look like the original one. In 1996, its bell was chosen as Japan's top 100 beautiful sounds and sceneries. Locals nicknamed it "Gan Gan Dera" (Ding Dong Church).
The color of the church is similar to the ancient Russian Byzantium style with a white wall and green steel ceiling. There are six small dome-shaped towers in the rooftop, and each has a cross on them. Behind the church, there is an ocean in the background, and the beautiful white and green church is now a famous photo spot.
It was the fifth bell to be chosen for the best sound in Japan. It rings about three to five times every Saturday from 5:00 pm and every Sunday's morning during the prayer.

This building was built in 1911 to serve as the Hakodate Post Office. This archetypal red brick structure that has survived through war and fire now plays a role in telling the story of Hakodate’s history. The inside of the building has become a shopping mall, and in addition to shops carrying Hokkaido’s folk art and glassware there is also a workshop in which visitors can try sandblasting and crafting music boxes, making this a great place to search for souvenirs.
