The Chapel of Bones was built in the seventeenth century by three Franciscan friars to convey the message of the transience and fragility of human life. This message is clearly conveyed to visitors right at the entrance, through the warning: “We bones that we are here, for your hope”, besides the spiritual question, there was also a physical question, because there were in the region of Évora, forty-two monastic cemeteries. they were taking up too much space and strategic places that many wanted to use for other purposes. So they decided to remove the skeletons from the earth and use them to build and decorate the chapel. The chapel was built where the friars were originally the dormitory and reflection room, the eight pillars of the chapel are lined with carefully arranged human bones and skulls linked by brown cement. The vaults are brick plastered white and painted with motifs that symbolize or allude to death. In addition to the bones, the Chapel of Bones is also decorated with religious statues and Renaissance and Baroque painting.
