    The Raifa Monastery is an active monastery surrounded by majestic churches and untouched nature.

    The Raifa Monastery of the Mother of God (Raifsky Bogoroditsky Monastery) is a monastery for men located in the Russian Diocese of Kazan. The monastery was established in 1613. in what is now the Republic of Tatarstan. Closed during the Soviet years, the property, in 1991, was the first monastery in the Diocese of Kazan and Mari to be returned to the Church of Russia. Restoration work began immediately. The monastery is the largest in the Diocese of Kazan and Tatarstan.

    The guide will tell you about the monastery origin, an exact copy of the Georgian Icon of the Mother of God, which is still considered to be the main shrine of the monastery since the seventeenth century.

    The second biggest cathedral of the monastery was sanctified in the name of the miraculous icon of the Virgin of Georgia which is the main shrine of the Raifa monastery. At present the cathedral is completely restored and the decorative works are being finished. Before it was closed in 1930 the glory of the Raifa Bogoroditsky Monastery was so great and its main shrine, the miraculous icon of the Virgin of Georgia was so revered and loved by people that even the Trinity Cathedral did not have enough room for all the believers and public prayers were held outside right in front of the temple. On the Trinity Day the icon was usually triumphantly moved to Kazan accompanied by a great multitude of believers and church leaders from all over Russia, and on July 31 it was brought back.

    In the middle of the monastery there is a magnificent Trinity Cathedral built by an architect Malinovski in 1904-10. It is a wonderful example of ancient Russian architecture viewed from a modern perspective. The temple resembles Moscow churches of the XVIIth century.

    The Sofia Church of the late 18th century is the smallest in Europe: only 7 people can fit inside the temple at any one time.

    The water in the spring is considered to have healing powers, which was confirmed as per the research investigations that took place in 1997 where experts proved that the water contains useful mineral properties, including silver. In winter, magnificent ice temples appear on the frozen lake. People from all over the world come here to breathe in the "crystal" air of an amazing place and to see the majestic architecture with their own eyes.
