Stop At: Kadugannawa Tea Factory & Sales Center, Kadugannawa, Sri Lanka

The Kadugannawa tea factory is not the prettiest or the finest of the tea factories in Sri Lanka, but if you are visiting Kandy, you absolutely must learn about tea, and if you are unable to get further afield into the tea region, then visiting a tea factory in Kandy is essential. There is a firm story to be uncovered here: of how a plant discovered by an Emperor in China 2700 years BC changed the world’s topography, demography and industrial markets irreversibly. Sri Lanka, as one of the world’s largest producers of tea, plays a vastly important role in this history and there’s a high chance that the tea you drink back home begins its life in Sri Lanka. Take a tour through this little factory to learn about the time-consuming production of tea and marvel at heavy machinery left over from British rule at the time of the Industrial Revolution. You will finish off the tour with a tea tasting.

Stop At: Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, Sri Dalada Veediya, Kandy 20000 Sri Lanka

The temple of the Scared Tooth Relic or Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy is a vital place of worship for Buddhists across the world and by today has become an important tourist attraction. This palace is visited by Buddhist devotees from all part of the world. Many foreign tourists used to visit Kandy during the "Esala Perahara" time which usually schedule in July/ August Time. This is a colorful Buddhist cultural parade to tribute the Tooth Relic of Load Buddha and this event held for 10 days of time. Due to its cultural importance, this city was named as a "World Heritage Site" by UNESCO. Since ancient times the tooth relic, which was brought to Sri Lanka from India played a major role in the political scene of the country. It is documented that it was the prime duty of the then King to safeguard the tooth relic. Therefore it was protected by the many Sri Lankan Kings for centuries and centuries. Since the arrival of the tooth relic in Sri Lanka in the 4th century AD, it was taken to various temples under the various Kingdoms. However, the tooth relic is now safely placed in its final resting place at the sacred temple of the Tooth which was brought to Kandy by King, Vimaladharmasuriya I. The king also created a golden casket to place the sacred Tooth Relic which can be seen even today at the temple.

Stop At: Kandy Lake Club - Cultural Dance Show, 7 Sangamitta Mawatha, Kandy 20000 Sri Lanka

Kandy Lake Club Located 300m up Sanghamitta Mawatha, this place has arguably the best costumes of any of the venues staging traditional Sri Lankan dance shows. Performances often conclude with a 'fire walking' (stepping on burning coals) finale. With elaborate costumes, gyrating dance moves and show-stopping, fire-breathing stunts, a Kandyan dance performance is one of the defining experiences of a stay in Kandy. Calling it a traditional Kandyan dance performance is something of a misnomer as the shows are very much aimed at audience entertainment and contain dance routines and costumes from across the country, including the famous ‘devil’ dances of the west coast (which are very hard to see in their home region).

Stop At: Bahiravokanda Vihara Buddha Statue, Bahirawa Kanda Rd, Kandy 20000 Sri Lanka

The Bahirawakanda Vihara Buddha Statue is situated on a hill named just 2 km from the Temple of the Tooth Relic. This beautifully sculptured white Buddha statue was built in 1972. Standing at 88 feet, it is considered as one of the biggest Buddha statues in Sri Lanka. There is a Buddhist temple located alongside the Buddha statue in the Bahirawa Kanda hill. The hill provides panoramic views of the Kandy city including the mountain range nearby and the Bogambara prison. Devotees can worship in the temple. The Bahirawakanda Vihara Buddha Statue displays Lord Buddha seated in the Nirvana pose and can be viewed from the entire city of Kandy. The best time to climb up the hill for spectacular views of the Kandy city is at night when the entire city is lit up with lights.
