Multiple South African Luxury Experiences

Every country in the world displays some diversity, but South Africa, stretching from the lions in the Kruger National Park to the iconic Table Mountain in the Cape, takes some beating. Enjoy the Country’s sweeping valleys of the Winelands, Cape Town’s jumping nightlife, Namakwa’s springtime symphony of wildflowers or KwaZulu-Natal’s iSimangaliso Wetland Park which alone has five distinct ecosystems, attracting both zebras and dolphins - there is something here for any person with any interest of any age. Although the country has its fair share of problems, South Africans are some of the most upbeat, welcoming and humorous folk you’ll encounter anywhere, from farmers in the rural north who tell you to drive safely on those dirt roads, to Khayelitsha kids who wish you molo (‘good morning’ in Xhosa).

Stop At: Soweto, Soweto, Johannesburg, Greater Johannesburg, Gauteng
FULL-DAY JOHANNESBURG, SOWETO AND APARTHEID MUSEUM TOUR
This sprawling metropolis of more than 3.5 million people on the outskirts of Johannesburg is synonymous with South Africa’s turbulent past and its hopes for the future. Soweto is a multi-cultural composite of South Africa today.

The tour will give you a peek into the past – treading the paths to greatness taken by Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. Stand on the only road in the world which honours two recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize.

The afternoon begins with a tour of the main city taxi rank across the road from Baragwanath Hospital. Visit the Mandela Squatter Camp, where you’ll see an African merchant of traditional medicines, step inside a typical four-roomed dwelling and meet the locals.

The tour proceeds to Orlando East, the oldest township of Soweto, built in 1933. Drive past schools, kindergartens and various residences to the Children’s and Old Age Day Care Centre.

Visit the Hector Peterson’s Memorial Stone, the first victim of the 1976 students uprising, and Freedom Square in Kliptown where the ANC's Freedom Charter was drafted in 1952.

Finally, drive pass Mr Mandela’s old house where he stayed before he was jailed – it’s on the same road as TRC Chairman Archbishop Tutu’s house and Winnie Mandela’s mansion.

Finish your tour at the Apartheid Museum. Powerful and moving, the Apartheid Museum takes visitors on an intriguing, horrifying and ultimately inspiring journey from the dark days of 'whites-only' privilege, through to Nelson Mandela's historic release from prison.

Located just 90 minutes from Johannesburg, the Cradle of Humankind is one of the richest hominid sites in the world, where our famous ancestors, Mrs Ples, Little Foot and Sediba were discovered. This important site holds UNESCO World Heritage status as it holds 40% of the world's human ancestor fossils and today, these sites are still active archaeological digs. Aside from visiting the museum and Maropeng, the official visitor centre, visitors can enjoy a guided tour of an active excavation.

It is widely recognised as the place from which all of humankind originated. It is not only a place of ongoing scientific discovery into our origins but also a place of contemplation – a place that allows us to reflect on who we are, where we come from and where we are going to. The Maropeng online exhibition guide complements the displays in the visitor centre at Maropeng.

The displays at Maropeng, as well as the interactive games and underground boat ride, focus on the earth and the origins on life on earth, man's pathway towards humanity, our human ancestry and the sustainability of life on the planet in the future.
