DescriptionThe narrow alleys of Mellah were once home to the city's Jewish population, as seen in landmarks like the Lazama Synagogue, with its tiled courtyard and exhibits on Jewish life, and the tranquil Miaara Jewish cemetery. Nearby are the lively Mellah Market, with meat and produce, and Bab Mellah Spice Souk. European-style cafes, upscale Moroccan restaurants and stalls selling grilled meats and tajines dot the area.

like most synagogues erected in Morocco, salat al- azamat, built in 1492, is located in the Mellah, originally meant for accommodating the Jewish community. Beautifully-sized, it was built around a central courtyard, a model of traditional architecture. only recently it has been revamped: a gallery for women (erzat nachim) has been added to its eastern wall and the usually mobile wooden arch, has been replaced by a marble arch adjoining the eastern wall.

implanted in the district originally Jew of the Mellah, the Jewish cemetery of Miaara testifies of the long history of the Jewish community of Marrakesh. old of more than 500 years, this vast space contains graves of a simple appearance and variable sizes, dated several centuries as a few years. on the left are numerous anonymized graves, testimony of the epidemies which raged in the city obliging a fast burying of bodies.
