Stop At: Manniquin Pis, Ikedacho Matsuo, Miyoshi Tokushima Prefecture

Visitors have a stunning view over the steep surrounding mountains and the turquoise Iya river, flowing more than 200 meters below them.

    Duration: 15 minutes

Stop At: Iya Kazura Bridge, Nishiiyayamamura Zentoku, Miyoshi 778-0102 Tokushima Prefecture

In the past centuries over 13 of these bridges offered passage over the Iya River, but nowadays only 3 remain.

    Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Ochiai Village, Higaishiiya Ochiai, Miyoshi 778-0202 Tokushima Prefecture

A small hamlet in the heart of Iya Valley with a collection of historical farm houses dating back to the mid-Edo era. Perched on a mountain side visitors can get an insight on the rural lifestyle and traditions that have been kept alive until the present day.

    Duration: 1 hour

Stop At: Okuiya Niju Kazurabashi Bridge, 620 Higashiiya Sugeoi, Miyoshi 778-0201 Tokushima Prefecture

Last stop of the day will be the double vine bridges of Oku-Iya Kazurabashi. These two vine bridges are located very close to each other and are called husband-and-wife-bridge. These bridges are definitely more of the adventurous type and should be avoided by people with fear of heights. There is also a small cable car that is operated by hand to cross over the river.

    Duration: 1 hour

Stop At: Oboke Koboke, Yamashirocho, Nishiu, Miyoshi 779-5451 Tokushima Prefecture

Oboke Gorge (大歩危, Ōboke) and neighboring Koboke Gorge (小歩危) a little ways downstream, are narrow, steep sided gorges near the entrance to the Iya Valley and popularly combined with a visit there. Cut by the swirling rapids of the Yoshino River, their names mean "big dangerous steps" and "small dangerous steps" as their jagged, rocky walls can be perilous to navigate.

The gorges are one of the leading outdoor destinations in Japan, rivaling Minakami in Gunma Prefecture, and are known for their beautiful natural scenery and for the variety of outdoor attractions, such as whitewater rafting and canyoning, that can be enjoyed on the river.

    Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Mt. Tsurugi, Koyadaira, Mima 779-3600 Tokushima Prefecture

Mount Tsurugi (剣山, Tsurugisan) is a 1955 meter high mountain that lies at the eastern end of the remote Iya Valley. The second tallest mountain on Shikoku Island, Mount Tsurugi is one of the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains and a center of Shugendo, a Japanese folk religion based on mountain worship. Mount Tsurugi is a popular hiking destination and, despite its name which translates to Sword Mountain, far from a challenging climb.

A relaxing chairlift takes visitors most of the way up the mountain to a station near the summit. From there it takes about 30 minutes to hike the most direct route to the peak, although there is an alternate route via Otsurugi Shrine which takes just a few minutes longer. At the top you will find a shrine, mountain huts, weather towers, and wooden boardwalks that lead to various viewpoints with panoramic views out over the surrounding mountains.

    Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Iya Kazura Bridge, Nishiiyayamamura Zentoku, Miyoshi 778-0102 Tokushima Prefecture

The Iya Valley (祖谷渓, Iyakei) is a secluded, mountainous valley along the Iya River in western Tokushima Prefecture. Its steep forested slopes are connected to the outside world by a winding, sometimes unbelievably narrow mountain road that navigates the valley. While the deeper parts of the Iya Valley may be difficult to access, this remoteness is what draws visitors to the area to experience a traditional, rural culture that is difficult to find in modern Japan.

Historically the Iya Valley has been a difficult place to enter, and has long served as a refuge for members of the defeated Taira Clan (also known as Heike) who escaped to the region toward the end of the 12th century after losing the Gempei War (1180-1185). Their descendants can still be found around the tiny mountain villages that dot the region.
