  • Day 1: Day 1 : CUSCO - OLLANTAYTAMBO - WIÑAYWAYNA - MACHU PICCHU - AGUAS CALIENTES

    Stop At: Cusco, Peru
We will collect you from your hotel early in the morning and drive you to the train station to catch the train to KM104, the starting point of the hike. After crossing the suspension bridge over the Urubamba River, visit the restored ruins at Chachabamba (2,150 m) then gradually ascend for approximately 8 km (around 4 hours) towards the archaeological site of Wiñayhuayna (2,650 m). This impressive Incan complex, built on the steepest of mountain slopes, consist of upper and lower house clusters interconnected by a long, precipitous staircase with accompanying fountain structures and a large area of agricultural terraces. Then, pass through cloud forest filled with brightly coloured orchids and across varying terrain. Climb the steep stone stairways that were constructed by the Incas and stop en route to tuck into a picnic lunch. Continue for another hour before reaching the Sun Gate, Inti Punku, (2,722 m), where you will be met by your first and most dramatic views of Machu Picchu (2,430 m). As we descend from Inti Punku, we will take a side path off the trail and take a bus to Aguas Calientes where you will check into your accommodation and enjoy a well-deserved rest.

    Day 2: Day 2 : AGUAS CALIENTES - MACHU PICCHU - OLLANTAYTAMBO - CUSCO

Stop At: Hatun Inti Clasic, Ave Pachacutec 607, Aguas Calientes 08681, Peru
After an early breakfast we will take the bus back up to Machu Picchu for a guided walking tour of the most important archaeological site in Peru. It is believed that Machu Picchu was built for the Inca emperor Pachacútec around 1450 as a holiday residence. The citadel was abandoned just over 100 years later, probably as a result of the Spanish Conquest, although historians have never uncovered why it was abandoned or how it escaped the destruction that other Inca settlements faced. Instead, the jungle slowly engulfed its stone construction, covering it in thick vegetation that kept it hidden and protected until the ‘lost city of the Incas’ was brought to international attention in 1911. Your tour will introduce you to the origins of this impressive citadel and guide you around some of its most iconic monuments, such as the main square, the royal rooms, the Temple of the Three Windows, the circular towers, the Sacred Clock and cemeteries. At the end of the tour, return to Aguas Calientes for lunch (not included) or a spot of souvenir shopping and then to board the train back to Cusco.
