Day 1: Travel to Tsagaan Suvarga
Stop At: Tsagaan Suvarga (White Stupa), Mongolia
We travel south of UB to the Gobi desert. Our route lies across boundless arid plains and hills. Despite the seeming emptiness an occasional nomadic home or a winter shelter will come in to view and even large flocks of sheep and goats, more seldom horses and camels. Our destination is Tsagaan Suvarga, a series of massive formations of sedimentary rock, a former seabed. Its vividly distinct layers of geological eras are spectacular. Equally spectacular is the view that opens from its top: boundless desert expanses, dancing mirages and time that is standing still. Here we stay in a nearby nomad herder family with traditional, felt covered circular tents. In the evening hike to watch the Tsagaan Suvarga at blazing dusk.

Stop At: Khongoryn Els, Gobi Desert, Dalanzadgad 212503 Mongolia
We travel west across great desert plains to Gurvan Saikhan mountain range and upon crossing it Khongoriin Els Sand dunes come in to our view. They stretch for almost 100km with the tallest dune reaching 200m from its foothill. Locals sometimes refer to them as the singing dunes due to a weird humming sound often heard on windy days. Fine sand gradually builds up on dune crests and eventually collapses triggering tremor that causes the sound. Take an excursion to the sand dunes and optionally ride a two humped Bactrian camel. We settle in a family with a view of the majestic dunes in the background.

Day 4: Travel to Ongi Monastery, visit Flaming Cliffs en-route
Stop At: Flaming Cliffs, Mongolia
We drive to Flaming Red Cliffs, a world renowned dinosaur fossil site where in 1920-ies, in a series of expeditions Americans unearthed the first nests of dinosaur eggs, new species of dinosaurs, and the fossils of early mammals that co-existed with the early reptiles. Upon reaching the cliffs that contrastingly stand out of the infinite arid plain, we explore the cliffs on foot. The eroded sandstone can still yield dinosaur fossils especially after a torrential rain so one can still hope for a discovery. Proceed driving and head north to Central Mongolia crossing a couple of hundred kilometers of endless arid plains and sandy tracts. Only dancing mirages and huge herds of Bactrian camels come across our way. Often people call such lands as the middle of nowhere. For the night we stay nearby the Ongi monastery ruins, once a massive Buddhist monastery that service the whole of Gobi region

Orkhon valley is almost entirely covered with volcanic lava crust that is a result of prehistoric volcanic eruption. Kharkhorin a.k.a Karakorum – a town, the 3rd son as well as chosen successor of Genghis Khan built, is the capital of the Mongol Empire in early 13th century. Karakorum functioned as the empire’s capital for just a few decades and was eventually demolished by invading the Chinese Min Dynasty troops in late 14th century. The main attraction today is the Erdene Zuu monastery, one of the first Buddhist monasteries in Mongolia established in 16th century when Buddhism was introduced as the new religion. Later the monastery suffered almost a complete destruction during the anti-religion campaigns of 1930-ies with just a dozen of temples surviving till present. Spend some time in the peaceful premises of the monastery and take a glance at a few surviving artifacts of the old capital. And finally visit the new Karakorum museum - a fantastic collection of artifacts and of historical data that has continually been replenished by new findings and discoveries.
