After a pick-up from your accommodation in Mexico City, enjoy a picturesque drive through Valley of Mexico before reaching el Paso de Cortés - a mountain pass between the Popocatépetl & Ixtaccíhuatl volcanoes situated on the altitude of 3400m, and, finally, La Joya - high mountain hut at an elevation of 3.977 m that is connected by one of the highest mountain roads of the country. This is a starting point for our ~3-4h hike along an intermediate-level trail that both novices & those with more hiking experience will enjoy. Depending on available time, weather & your physical condition we will ascend till 4,200-4,800 meters, which will provide us with great views of snowcapped peaks, surrounding valley and, of course, the smoking peak & glacier of a nearby Popocatepetl Volcano. Take your time for memorable pictures and enjoy the tranquility & severe beauty of this mountainous place. Once ready, we will descent & go to a nearby town of Amecameca to explore its pretty historic center and try some of its best food specialties.

Orientation walk around the historic center of Amecameca. The name of this town comes from Nahuatl & means “place where the papers signal or mark,” or “paper used ceremoniously" as some of the most important ceremonial centers that worshipped deities of the mountains were located here. Nowadays, this charming town, sheltered by the majestic Popocatépetl & Iztaccíhuatl volcanoes, is popular with weekend visitors from Mexico City, Puebla & Morelos that come to enjoy its mountainous scenery, eat local delicacies, visit the Sanctuary of the Señor del Sacromonte & other attractions. The area receives many visitors during the annual Carnival/Festival del Señor del Sacromonte, which extends over the week containing Ash Wednesday and is considered to be one of the most important festivals in Mexico State.

Market Food Experience with tastings of some of the most symbolic regional dishes (can vary based on the season).
Some of the most characteristic regional dishes are mixiotes and rabbit meat. The first ones can be of chicken, pork, beef, giblets, lamb or rabbit, with its inevitable avocado leaf and chile de arbol or guajillo. The wrapping varies and can be made of totomoxtli (corn leaf), metl (maguey skin) or simple aluminum foil.
Other typical stews of the region that are prepared according to the season are: chileatole, a drink made with corn, epazote and chile; the colorín cakes, made with colorín flowers, flour and eggs, are accompanied by a green sauce; the pipián with mushrooms and the tlacoyos of blue or white corn filled with broad beans or beans, the mole, the barbecue, the chiles en nogada, the Christmas salad, the bread of the dead and the jumble of Lent.
The most traditional Amecameca drinks are the Castilla pecan liqueur and the pulque blanco or cured with fruits, vegetables and seeds.

Within its colonial buildings, Amecameca houses the sanctuary dedicated to the Lord of Sacromonte, built on the remains of pre-Hispanic temples of indigenous Teocallis & Amoxcallis. Inside there is the image of the Christ made with corn cane paste and the urn of the main altar, where you can see the image of the Lord of the Sacromonte. It is also an important viewpoint from which you can admire the town and take a perfect panoramic picture of the volcanoes.
