    It was designed by Ammi B. Young who was the Supervising Architect of the U.S. Treasury. Young designed buildings from his studio at the treasury in the 1850s.

    USS Wisconsin (BB-64) is an Iowa-class battleship. She was built at Philadelphia Naval Shipyard and launched on 7 December 1943 (the second anniversary of the Pearl Harbor raid).

    This ship protected freedom and US interests throughout the 20th century.

    The four-acre site holds a strategic position. From here defenders can see approaching vessels long before they reach the narrow section of the river. This position proved effective when Fort Norfolk and the USS Constellation successfully defended Norfolk from British attackers in the War of 1812.

    The residents of Norfolk burned and looted the city to deprive the British of any prizes when its capture was imminent in 1776. This church's walls survived the fires and cannonballs. It was rebuilt a few years later.

    Moses Myers was in the international shipping business and contributed to our revolutionary cause by smuggling weapons. He spent two years in a British prison for his efforts.

    Five generations of the Myers family lived in the Moses Myers House from 1795 until 1931.

    We will enter the museum briefly to view Norfolk's most prized artifact, the Norfolk Mace.
    On April one 1754 the Lieutenant Governor of Virginia Robert Dinwiddie presented Norfolk with this silver ceremonial mace.
    It symbolized our city’s sovereignty and governing authority.

    For centuries this mace served as the “standard” for Norfolk. If it was lost or captured, the authority to govern the city would have been in jeopardy.
