Day 2: Cultural Dance Workshop & Buddhist Temple Tour with an Art Scholar

Stop At: Panadura, Panadura, Western Province
Spend time with a local dance teacher learning traditional drum & dance techniques. Sri Lanka counts three main traditions of dance: the Kandyan dances of the hill country, known as uda rata natum; the low country dances of the Southern plains, known as pahatha rata natum; and the tradition of the Rathnapura province of Sabaragamuwa natum. Each tradition presents multiple sub-styles to express various mythological narratives.

During this interactive workshop you will be introduced to a set of beginner steps and movements. You will equally learn three different drum rhythms and will witness a professional dance demonstration.
    Duration: 3 hours

Stop At: Bellanwila Rajamaha Viharaya, Dehiwala Rd, Boralesgamuwa 10290 Sri Lanka
Visit a beautifully picturesque Buddhist temple in the suburbs of Colombo. This important monastic complex has a long history dating back to the early Anuradhapura period. The legend has it that one of the eight saplings of Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi tree was planted at the heart of the temple grounds and has been worshipped by the local devotees for many centuries. The “lankathilaka” of this temple is built to the same architectural design as the Polonnaruwa image house. It is decorated with master artist paintings illustrating the episodes in Gautama Buddha’s life and path to Nirvana.

You will be accompanied by an art scholar on a curated tour of the temple paintings and symbolic rituals as practiced in the Theravada tradition of Buddhism. You will learn the various iconography and religious symbols used in the Buddhist art tradition of Sri Lanka, from its ancient to its modern era. This activity is ideal for those seeking to gain a deeper understanding of cultural traditions as expressed through art and daily religious practices. It can be conducted for groups and individuals.
