    The Madu River Safari is popular activity that has to be on the 'to do' list of any respectable Sri Lankan holiday goer. Madu River is located in the south of Sri Lanka near Galle. The water of the river is dotted with small islands and the banks are all covered with lush mangrove forests that are home to dozens of incredible animal species. Madu river is Sri Lanka’s second largest wetland and it consists of 64 islands including two main islands with to 215 families living in them.

    The Ariyapala Mask Museum in Ambalangoda is a characterful spot which brings alive the skill of Sri Lanka mask making. Ambalangoda is well known for traditional masks carvings and masks dancing. The present institution named ‘Ariyapala & Sons’ passing through their fifth generation of traditional masks carving and dancing is a very popular cultural center in Ambalangoda. It was named after “Ariyapala Wijesuriya Gurunnanse”, one of the greatest master craftsmen in Sri Lanka. This museum, with its dioramas and explanations in English, gives an interesting insight into Sri Lankan masks and the meanings behind them.

    The Galle Fort, or Dutch Fort as it is also known, is a fortification first built by the Portugese on the Southwestern coast of Sri Lanka. It was built first in 1588 by the Portuguese, then extensively fortified by the Dutch during the 17th century from 1649 onwards. It is a historical, archaeological and architectural heritage monument, which even after more than 432 years maintains a polished appearance, due to extensive reconstruction work done by Archaeological Department of Sri Lanka. The heritage value of the fort has been recognized by the UNESCO and the site has been inscribed as a cultural heritage UNESCO World Heritage Site.

    Stilt fishing is a unique Sri Lankan tradition which requires a great deal of patience. The origins of stilt fishing is unknown although many believe that it was introduced by traders to merchants who have witnessed these traders coming from sea with mesh bags filled with fish. Therefore this hereditary practice was passed down from generation to generation. From a high position, the fisherman casts his line, and waits until a fish comes along to be caught. The beautiful sight of fishermen perched branched poles as they fish skillfully during dawn, noon and dusk can now be seen commonly along the southern coast in towns such as Koggala. This will definitely be one of the most iconic images you'll ever see in Sri Lanka.

    Day 2: Galle - Unawatuna - Mirissa

    Stop At: Japanese Peace Pagoda, Rumassala, Unawatuna 80600 Sri Lanka
    On the hillside west of Unawatuna, this impressive pagoda was built by Japanese Buddhist monks of the Mahayana sect in 2005, as part of their scheme to build peace temples in conflict zones. There are four peace pagodas in Sri Lanka, and this is one of them. There are 80 such Peace Pagodas in the world and they have all been built by the Japanese Nipponzan Myohoji Nikaya.It is said to have been built with the assistance of the Japanese and at present you can find a large statue of Hanuman at the entrance.

    One of those 'secret' spots that everyone seems to knows about, Jungle Beach is a pretty bay just west of Unawatuna. It is the perfect place for to relax in serenity and calmness, away from the bustling energy of the main beach. As the name suggests, there is a forest right behind the stretch of beach.     Day 4: Tissamaharama - Yala

    Stop At: Tissamaharama Raja Maha Vihara, Tissamaharama Sri Lanka
    The Tissamaharama Raja Maha Viharaya is a Buddhist temple in Tissamaharama, Sri Lanka. It was built in the 2nd century BC by King Kavan Tissa of Ruhuna (Southern Sri Lanka). The site was consecrated by Lord Buddha himself, who spent some time in meditation there with 500 arhats (individuals who have reached enlightenment). The Tissamaharama Dagoba which is situated in the premises of Tissamaharama Raja Maha Viharaya is one of the largest stupas in Sri Lanka. A stupa is a Buddhist dome-shaped religious monument found largely on the Indian subcontinent and also called a dagoba in Sri Lanka.

    Yala National Park is the most visited and second largest national park in Sri Lanka, bordering the Indian Ocean. The park is mainly popular for its leopard population. Apart from tracking leopards, the Yala National Park is home to a variety of game, both big and small that will keep a family of wildlife enthusiasts on safari, busy. There is a substantial Sri Lankan Elephant population at the Yala National Park, which is a recognized subspecies of the Asian Elephant, and can often be spotted in large herds, baby elephants in tow, at various locations inside the National Park. The other 44 species of mammals at Yala National Park include the Sri Lankan Sloth Bear, Wild Water Buffaloes, Spotted Deer and many others. Along with the leopard, some of these are threatened species as well.

    Day 5: Yala - Ella

    Stop At: Nine Arches Bridge, Ella Sri Lanka
    The Nine Arch Bridge also called the Bridge in the Sky, is a viaduct bridge in Sri Lanka. The Nine Arch Bridge in Ella is on the Demodara loop and spans 91 meters at a height of 24m.Built entirely out of brick, rock and cement; without a single piece of steel; the bridge has stood solid from 1921, its time of creation. According to history, the bridge was built by the locals using such materials; when the construction came to a standstill from the lack of steel caused by World War I. But, in addition to this history; lore abounds the creation of the bridge.

    Ravana Falls in one of the best waterfalls you will find in Sri Lanka. Located 6kms from Ella is this 3 tier cascading waterfall, flowing down the mountain side. It currently ranks as one of the widest falls in the country. This waterfall measures approximately 25 m (82 ft) in high and cascade from an oval-shaped concave rock outcrop. During the local wet season, the waterfall turns into what is said to resemble an areca flower with withering petals. The falls have been named after the legendary character Ravana, which is connected to the famous Indian epic, the Ramayana.
