A major reconstruction took place commencing in 1888 and it is rumored that the Empress Dowager Cixi took money that was to be used for rebuilding the Chinese navy and used it to rebuild the Summer Palace instead. Inside the vast parkland of the Summer Palace you can enjoy hills, lakes and thousands of man-made ancient structures in an area of almost 750 acres.
